This song was popularized by Planxty (sung by Johnny Moynihan) in the 1970's and appears on their album Cold Blow and the Rainy Night. Many thanks to Clare Toland who created the artwork.
lyrics
As I went out one May morning,
To take a pleasant walk,
I sat myself down by an old stone wall,
Just to hear two lovers talk
To hear two lovers talk my love,
To hear what they might say,
That I might know some more about love before I go away
"P" stands for paddy I suppose,
"J" for my love John,
"W" stands for false Willy-o,
but Johnny is the fairest man
Johnny is the fairest man she said,
Johnny is the fairest man,
I don't care what anybody says, Johnny is the fairest man
Oh come sit you down beside me he says
Gather on this green
For it’s been three quarts of a year or more
since together we have been
I’ll not sit down beside you she says
Now nor another time
For I hear you have another girl
And Your hearts no longer mine
Your hearts no longer mine she said,
Your hearts no longer mine!
I don't care what anyone says for your hearts no longer mine.
"P" stands for paddy I suppose,
"J" for my love John,
"W" stands for false Willy-o,
but Johnny is the fairest man
Johnny is the fairest man she said,
Johnny is the fairest man,
I don't care what anybody says, Johnny is the fairest man
I will walk the tall tall trees
Rob the wild birds nest
When I come down I’ll show some love
To the girl I love the best
To the girl I love the best my dear
The girl I love the best
When I come down I’ll show some love
To the girl I love best
"P" stands for paddy I suppose,
"J" for my love John,
"W" stands for false Willy-o,
but Johnny is the fairest man
Johnny is the fairest man she said,
Johnny is the fairest man,
I don't care what anyone says, Johnny is the fairest man
"P" stands for paddy I suppose,
"J" for my love John,
Now I know some more about love before I carry on.

This is quite simply one of the best acoustic albums I've ever heard, beautifully crafted, superbly played, and with a quality of songs that will knock your socks off. followjohnreed

Absolutely beautiful. Please release more straight up acoustic material. Love the albums too, but after catching you guys at that weird magazine gig in Sheffield (Dec '18 - the one with the noisy bar c#*ts) it was apparent just how magical Ríoghnach's voice is. Not often singers sound better in real life than in the recorded stuff - spine tingling voice, plus Stuart's incredible guitar style. Bez23
